Read each possession

Basketball moves quickly, but each possession has a shape. Notice how a team creates space, moves the ball and finds a shot. The scoreboard tells you the result of that sequence; the movement explains how it happened.

Before tip-off

Check the competition, starting line-up and recent schedule. A rotation can change when players are unavailable or a team has played on consecutive days. Use those details to put recent form into context.

Watch the supporting numbers

Rebounds, turnovers and free throws help explain changes in the score. Compare the pace of the game as well: a high total can reflect more possessions rather than better shooting.

Review the turning points

Look at the runs of play, substitutions and late-game decisions. Keep observations specific and distinguish a strong performance from a prediction about the next match.
