Understand the court

Surface and conditions help shape a tennis match. Clay, grass and hard courts reward different patterns of movement and ball striking. Indoor conditions can also produce a different rhythm from an exposed outdoor court.

Read the score properly

Games and sets are the starting point. First-serve percentage, break points and return performance add context, particularly when a close set is decided by only a few points.

Follow the players

Look at recent court time, the tournament schedule and each player’s usual style. A head-to-head record is useful background, but a previous meeting on a different surface may have limited relevance.

Build a balanced picture

Pair the scorecard with the match report. Describe the rallies, patterns and turning points rather than assuming that one statistic explains the entire contest.
